Alex Cowley can remember as a child, growing up in England, being fascinated by all things to do with nature. He’d spend hours drooling over copies of National Geographic and its stunning images from all over the world and he’d always tune-in on Sunday nights to watch the David Attenborough natural history TV programs. “I just couldn’t get enough. It was that, I think, that developed my passion for landscape photography”.

Alex always liked to mess with his pictures and would always aim to produce something that was just that little bit different. Making the change from traditional darkroom to digital about eight years ago opened up a whole new world for him and he immediately started experimenting.

His passion?  Alex loves skies. He moved to Australia in 2001 and the first thing that struck him was how much bigger the sky was than in the UK. ‘I know it sounds daft, but there seemed to be so much more of it here and it’s really affected my work.’ He started to look at the sky as more than a background, and now spends a lot of time working the sky as part of the image-making process. Having the power to completely change the feeling and emotion of a picture, Alex loves nothing more than a really intense, brooding storm cloud or two.
